Fishing
Report
Report as at
August 2006
I have just returned
from two months of fishing charters in the Northern Territory. The trip
was very successful with some awesome catches. Back home, the winter has
slowed things down somewhat. The limited time I have spent on the water
since my return has seen catches of Bream, Calamari and Garfish. The water
temperatures have been very low this Winter and some fish species have
been slow to take lures. Bait fishing has however been very successful.
Spring is just 5 weeks away. This should liven up the fishes response
to artificial baits.
We had some of the
best soft plastic fishing I have ever seen in Spring last year and I am
looking forward to an equally good season this Spring. Our mainland Bream
stocks have been under extreme pressure of late, as so many people are
choosing to target this species. How lucky we are here to have river systems
that are not pressured. Here it is still possible to be the only vessel
working a river system . There is a theory on the Mainland that Bream
are not responding to lures presented regularly and time and time again.
This certainly is not happening down here. Our Bream have never been fished
for commercially and at this stage do not have the large number of keen
anglers chasing them. We still have large numbers of the species and this
includes the older, larger trophy Bream.
The trout opens in
a fortnight and with a very productive season last year we are all keen
to wet our flies again this season. The dry fly fishing was exceptional
last season with grasshoppers and caddis being most effective.
Many of my clients
are amazed not only by the standard of fishing but also the variety of
fishing that is at our doorstep. So for those of you interested in a package
deal consider this!
Within half an hour of your St Helens Accommodation you could be: Chasing
Big Bream or
Stalking wild brown trout or
Fighting it out with a large Australian Salmon or Silver Trevally
I look forward to
reporting what should be an exciting next few months.
Regards,
Michael
